Moderna on Wednesday submitted a request to the Food and Drug Administration to approve vaccine booster doses for all adults 18 years of age and older.

FDA authorization will open doors for tens of millions of Americans to obtain a third dose of the vaccine, as a growing amount of data shows that the vaccine’s effectiveness wanes over time.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has already allowed booster doses of Moderna for older adults and people at high risk of infection six months after they complete their first course of injections.
